Love Basketball Story
The main reason I started coaching women’s basketball is because I have two daughters, Luna and Matilda, and I wanted them to play basketball. In Spain it is very easy to find places to play but in the UK it’s a real challenge. So I decided to post an advert on the internet and I built up my first team: the Penguins.
After the first year, the response was so overwhelming and the club was expanding so I decided to build a basketball academy specialised in training girls and women, so that when my daughters grow up they have a place to play. We are currently the biggest women’s basketball club in the UK with over 150 players and two leagues: the Superleague & the Division 1. We play and train at five different venues with purpose-built basketball courts across London.
I live in a small flat, with my daughters, my wife, Logan and Luka (our cats named after Wolverine and Luka Doncic), and slowly the basketball equipment was taking over the flat. For a very long time (years!) one of the showers was full with basketballs until we started renting a storage facility so we could keep our brand new Nike uniforms in there. I always say, “My wife is a saint because not everyone would be able to live like that but hey, Ball is Life!”
So many memories and stories. So many games, coaches and players season after season. We experienced very tough and challenging times but also good and fun times. It has been a ride!
One of the coolest experiences for my coaches and players was playing in an exhibition game at the BBL & WBBL Finals at the O2 Arena in front of 15,000. We even had a video from our club shown on the massive screen. And now we will be doing it all again in 2026.
My dream for my little girls, to have access to, and share their passion for basketball has turned into a successful and exciting academy. Over the years, it has been truly inspiring to see this club grow into something so amazing and rewarding.
To have the opportunity every day to work doing what I love, and being able to create a space where so many people can play basketball, has truly been beyond any of my wildest dreams. This is the biggest reward that I could ever imagine. We will keep working hard to make a lot of people happy through our club.
